Untitled design-5.png

We are currently opening our doors for 6 local aspiring directors to come and develop their skills and knowledge with us this Spring.

This scheme is a combination of free mentorship, paid practical experience within our upcoming R&D project and a paid opportunity to direct a short piece of new writing in a new writing showcase.

Applicants will need to have good availability between 06/05/2025-10/05/2025 and be free on May 30th & May 31st. The applicants must also be based in Luton or the surrounding Bedfordshire area.

The scheme includes:

  • A paid opportunity to shadow our Artistic Directors, Sam Edmunds and Vikesh Godhwani, within an upcoming R&D of a new play at The Hat Factory Arts Centre this May. This is an opportunity to observe a creative team in the development of a new piece of writing and also seeing the directors work with the actors and writers. For this day you will be paid £12.21 p/hour for 8 hours. We will work with the trainee director to accommodate their schedule and when they can enter the room. This will take place between 6th May - 10th May.

  • Alongside this Chalk Line will also employ you to direct either a short monologue, duologue, or scene written as part of their new young writers group, working alongside local young talent. This again will be paid at £12.21 p/hour with rehearsals taking place 9am-3pm on May 30th and 1pm-4pm May 31st. The showcase will be 5pm-6pm May 31st. This provides the opportunity to gain a professional credit. Please only apply for this role if you are free on these days.

  • Our Artistic Directors will also provide some 1-1 mentorship offering practical career advice.
